Parish church of S. Gennaro

Categories: Churches and Places of Worship

The Parish Church of San Gennaro was rebuilt between the 19th and 20th centuries. It has a single nave with a gabled façade surmounted by a small bell gable with a bell and a pair of oculi to illuminate the interior.

The portal is embellished with a terracotta ring. The patronage was divided between the bishop's table in Campli, the Chapter of the Cathedral of S. Maria in Platea in Campli and the Collegiate Church (formerly abbey) of S. Pietro of Campovalano. Ancient documents attest that in 1330 the church of S. Gennaro of "Melatino" paid annually to the bishop of Teramo six “tomoli” of wheat, in 1530 it paid 3. It was rebuilt in 1704 next to the pre-existing one, ruined by the disastrous earthquake of L'Aquila in 1703.

The interior houses various sacred furnishings from the nearby Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, which was demolished. There are two ancient holy water stoups, one from the late sixteenth century, with phytomorphic decorations.

Two remarkable canvases from the other church depict the Madonna with Child and angels (late 16th - early 17th century) and an Annunciation, similar to the one in the Piano Risteccio district, in the Fucignano di Civitella del Tronto hamlet.

A clay statue of the Madonna and Child with mobile hands, perhaps from the 16th century, from the Nocellese school, inspired by the Renaissance wooden models of L'Aquila. In the niche on the opposite wall, a modern wooden simulacrum of the Madonna del Carmine. The statue of St. Gennaro, usually exhibited in the large niche behind the altar, is kept in a makeshift room.
