Church of S. Maria in Venales

Categories: Churches and Places of Worship

The ancient Church of S. Maria ad Venales is isolated in the Le Venali district, in the hamlet of Roiano. Of the medieval S. Maria di "Abenano" there are some traces of masonry in the apse area, with large bricks joined dry.

Rebuilt and enlarged perhaps in the sixteenth century when the patronage, as reported by Palma, was divided into thirds, and a part of the property of the Sabatini family. It became a Royal Patronage due to the extinction of the aforementioned family.

The gabled façade has a portal with simple stone cornices, but off-center, after the scarp reinforcements on the left side of the church.
Inside, devoid of furnishings, remains of a Baroque wooden coffered ceiling painted with rosettes and angels. In the center of the floor, the ossuary hatch.

The main altar has ruined frescoes ("Madonna del Rosario" and "Assumption of the Virgin") dated 1604 and enclosed in floral frames. Remains of a gilded wooden baroque tabernacle and a stone stoup. From this temple comes the clay Madonna of the Nocellese school preserved in a niche in the parish church of Roiano.

The church of S. Maria of "Alvenano" in 1371 delivered on the feast of the Assumption, to the Aprutino Chapter (of the Cathedral of Teramo), 6 tomoli of wheat as “quartaria” and the quotas of the services, at Easter.
