The bell tower of the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Platea stands majestically and majestically on the streets of the village, with the splendid octagon in Lombard style, built by Maestro Antonio from Lodi at the end of the 15th century.
Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, overlooked by the Cathedral which owes its name to the statue of the Virgin, from the top of the stone portal, turns its maternal and protective gaze to the city. The tripartite façade refers to contrasting eras and architectural styles: the Romanesque of the sides and the bell tower and the neoclassical style of the central part, remodeled to a design by the architect Giovanni Fontana from Penne in 1793.
Looking up, one is fascinated by the wooden ceiling, the work of the master Donato Teodoro who entrusts to the theatricality of the late Baroque style the representation of the scene of the Assumption, in the center of the ceiling and, on the sides, of the scenes from the life of San Pancrazio, co-patron of the city of Campli.
The cathedral is a treasure trove of medieval and Renaissance treasures. In the left aisle of the Cathedral you can admire the altar of the Blessed Sacrament, created by Sebastiano da Como in 1532, embellished with the works of important Renaissance masters from Abruzzo and the Marche: Silvestro dell’Aquila and Cola dell’Amatrice.
In the crypt, precious frescoes from the Giotto school decorate the walls and vaults. The most recent part houses the Sanctuary dedicated to the Immaculate Virgin, “Patroness, Queen, Advocate and Protectress” of the city since 1764, when Campli was freed from a strong epidemic of fevers through the intercession of the Virgin.
