The ancient medieval suburb of Castelnuovo was part of the so-called trimonzio which together with the towns of Campli and Nocella formed a single urban agglomeration. Today the Campli district, in the ancient part it preserves the most significant urban systems of Abruzzo, among the most interesting as regards the architecture of some buildings, and the well-preserved Eastern Gate.
Also called the “Angioina” gate, it was built in the second half of the 1300s and is considered one of the longest-lived fortifications in the area.
