Category: Art and history

Tortoreto - Giulianova - Roseto (Montepagano) – Silvi

Starting from Campli we head towards the Adriatic coast to explore the wonderful seaside villages of the Teramo coast. Following the SP262, first, and the SP8, then, in just 30 minutes, we reach the first stop of our itinerary: Tortoreto, a medieval village rich in history and architectural beauties.

Here we can admire the famous Clock Tower characterized by the presence of beautiful gothic arches and the clock from which its name derives. Absolutely worth seeing are the Church of the Madonna della Misericordia built in 1347 and the Church of the Madonna del Carmine built in 1529. Walking through the streets of the historic center of Tortoreto Alta it is almost impossible not to notice the panoramic terraces that characterize the village, here you can treat yourself a moment of relaxation and admire the magnificent view that stretches from the green hills of Abruzzo to the blue of the Adriatic Sea.

Just 14 minutes from Tortoreto, we find Giulianova Paese, a village with very ancient origins, in the Middle Ages it was known as Castel San Flaviano, but in the fourteenth century it was destroyed during the war for the crown of the South so the Duke Giulio Antonio Acquaviva decided to rebuild it and, from its name, the name of Giulianova derives. To visit absolutely is the Cathedral of San Flaviano which, with its marvelous dome, is the symbol of the city.

Continuing the journey southwards we reach the Borgo di Montepagano, a hamlet and historic center of Roseto degli Abruzzi. Among the medieval streets of this hamlet there are treasures of great beauty and historical importance such as the Porta Borea, the Church of the Santissima Annunziata and the Castle of Montepagano.

Finally, as the last stop of our itinerary we head towards Silvi Paese, famous for its characteristic arches that surround the base of the historic center and for the wonderful belvedere with a breathtaking view that, on the clearest days, goes from Giulianova to Pescara. Also worth seeing is the Church of San Salvatore, dating back to 1110, which houses some frescoes dating back to the mid-Duke century and two medieval holy water stoups.
