Street vendors, figula shops and santarellari
The trades of terracotta seller and craftsman have distinguished themselves and handed down over the centuries, from the flourishing trade in wools and fabrics dating back to the Middle Ages to the activity of the masters of Nocella who produced and sold “figule” crockery in the shops up to a few decades ago. A testimony of this important artisan activity can be found in the numerous earthenware statues of  Madonna (Mary, mother of Jesus)  present in the churches of the area which were created by Nocellese artists from the end of the fifteenth century.

The activity of the “street vendor” is typical of the Campli area. There are testimonies of nineteenth-century Campleses merchants who went as far as the Far East to buy trinkets to resell in the markets and fairs of the Italian regions.

The craft of the itinerant salesman has also been able to adapt to the economic needs of the time, transforming himself into a “Santarellaro”, first trading wood and copper engravings and then sacred and votive images printed on paper.

Santarellaro was a profession that still survives in some local characters and that has allowed the genius of Campleses to make a fortune in the world. Some of them are still famous art dealers and gallery owners today. Important is the persistence of street vendors of clothing and different kinds, especially in the area of Saint Onofrio and its surroundings. Their stands can be found in the main markets and fairs that take place in Abruzzo and Marche.

Local Handicraft
Alongside the traditions of the past, in some shops in the historic center the art of embroidery and carving persist, albeit with innovative techniques. The craft of embroidery, a very fine art, practiced since ancient times, is combined with the originality of products and design, also made using creative recycling techniques. The precious yarns such as wool, cotton, linen and lace enrich wedding kits and layettes for the birth but also personalized objects to make your home unique.

Among the crafts that interest young people, there is the goldsmith's art that is expressed through the creativity of a young goldsmith who combines the applied art of traditional Abruzzeses jewels with innovative goldsmith techniques to create unique jewels and unconventional forms.

The Campli’s territory, with its sunny valleys, is the ideal place for the cultivation of lavender, whose flowers become essential oils, perfumes and body care creams made by a young local farmer.
